About the Barlovento stool
Barlovento is a stool in steam-bent American red oak, designed and made by Andrés Mariño Maza in Madrid. It is a unique piece: because of its complexity, each Barlovento stool is made individually, not as an edition.
It draws on traditional wooden boatbuilding. Boatbuilders created strong, light forms that unite beauty and function, shaped by the sea and the wind and by the need to use resources sparingly. The wood is bent into efficient, streamlined shapes that make the most of its grain. The working drawings below show the elevations, the seat, the bending form and the leg laminations.
Barlovento was one of the three winners of Toca Madera 2020, organised by the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) with AIDI, and was exhibited with the other winning pieces at the Fernán Gómez cultural centre in Madrid in February 2020.

How is it made?
Strips of American red oak are steamed, bent over forms and laminated to make the legs, following the methods of wooden boatbuilding.
Is Barlovento part of an edition?
No. Barlovento is a unique piece. Because of its complexity, each stool is made individually.
How should I care for it?
The pieces are finished with natural oils and waxes. Dust with a soft, dry cloth, or a slightly damp cloth for more thorough cleaning, and avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Keep the piece away from excess moisture, direct sunlight, heat sources and sudden changes in temperature.

Toca Madera
2020
Barlovento was one of the three winners of Toca Madera 2020, a design competition for young designers in Spain organised by the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) with AIDI. Participants were asked to create an “infinite object”: a piece made to stand the test of time. The winning pieces were exhibited at the Fernán Gómez cultural centre in Madrid in February 2020.
