About the Sapiens chair

Sapiens is a chair made entirely of solid wood, designed and made by Andrés Mariño Maza at MARINOMAZA, his design, prototyping and manufacturing lab in Ajalvir, Madrid. Four interlocking pieces work together to form its structure, a modern form reminiscent of Escher’s patterns.

The aim was to design a sustainable chair that shows the beautiful wooden joinery that modern machinery and software can produce. The working drawings below show the elevation, the plan and the joint detail.

It is made in oak, ash, cherry or walnut, and each piece is unique in its wood combination. It is finished with natural oils and waxes, measures W 410 × H 875 × D 570 mm and weighs 7 kg. Sapiens is made in an annual numbered edition, and each chair carries the MARINOMAZA stamp with its number and year.

Questions

How is it made?

Four pieces of solid wood are cut and joined so that they interlock and hold each other, in the MARINOMAZA workshop in Ajalvir, Madrid.

How are the pieces numbered?

Each Sapiens chair is stamped with the MARINOMAZA stamp, its number in the year’s edition and the year.

How should I care for it?

The pieces are finished with natural oils and waxes. Dust with a soft, dry cloth, or a slightly damp cloth for more thorough cleaning, and avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Keep the piece away from excess moisture, direct sunlight, heat sources and sudden changes in temperature.

Where is it available, and how do I enquire?

Enquiries go directly to MARINOMAZA, through the enquiry form on this site or by email to andres@marinomaza.com.
